When Daddy's Away...

Justin left at 4 a.m. on Thursday for a Conference in Jacksonville, Florida. I was really trying to feel bad for him... until he sent a text saying he was eating Cinnabon. (There are no Cinnabon's in Wichita... anywhere.) My empathy was quickly replaced with jealousy.

Thursday night was a really difficult night with the boys. I won't go in to detail for fear that someone may call child services, but it was tough. I spent the evening and next day praying and processing and feeling like a failure as a mother. I came to realize that the root of the problem is me. I've been letting my responsibilites (dishes, cleaning, laundry, etc...) go, and then when the boys would step over the sweatshirt they threw on the floor instead of picking it up I would freak out and yell at them. I'm transferring my frustration with myself and my short comings on to my children when they are acting like ... well ... children. So after many explative, tears, requests for forgiveness and the like, I attempted to enjoy my children... and my messy house.

Saturday was B E A U T I F U L ... 67 degrees, not a cloud in the sky. We had a picnic in the front yard with Lennon our neighbor. Mac and Cheese isn't the best picnic food, but it was easy.

Jakin was too busy to eat because he was working on an obstacle course for his scooter... video

Asher took a slightly different approach. video

It was such a fun day I thought we should set up the tent downstairs and have a campout! WHAT WAS I THINKING??? It was awful. Asher kept talking in his sleep, the floor was harder than the ground, I had NO ROOM, and all I could think of was that my bed was RIGHT UPSTAIRS!! I moved to the couch at 3 a.m. and did sleep a little. Of course the boys wanted to do it again on Saturday night. I slept in the guest bedroom next door.

Today wasn't quite as fun filled, but we did put this together...

dude....you are the best mom. you love your boys- and that makes you a great mom. you put a tent up in your basement...that makes you a fun mom. you make a film with your oldest...that makes you a super cool mom, and smart too. and of course - asking for forgiveness and realizing your imperfections means that you are way ahead of the game and are aware that you need a 'bigger' source to make it through lifes 'step over the sweatshirt' sort of days. youre a great mom. keep keepin on friend!

HILARIOUS...um, I mean, Bravo! What talent in your home! I hope they were all paid according to the actors guild union standards.
Kara, I think you hit the nail on the head about your mothering...only b/c I am guilty (over and over again) of the same crime. You are an amazing woman for owning up to it and not displacing it on someone/something else. Your boys are the most beautiful, happy, intelligent kids I have met and a great deal of that comes from the freedom you have allowed them since creation!
Cheers!
Suz
PS There ain't no cinnabon that will compare to the experience you shared with your kids! There may be a few spa sessions that would be better, but hey...

You are all so creative! Wow! I'm impressed! The boys should remember it as a fantastic weekend. And you have the movies to show it.
I would not have enjoyed the mac and cheese for the picnic, but I know the kids like it ANYTIME!!
I would settle for a nice steak!!
The movie was great. How did you do that? I think Steven Spielberg (sp?) has something to worry about!!
I hope the boys don't expect ME to sleep in the tent!
There's no way! This Grandma could not handle that.
See you soon.
Love,
Mom

Hi Kara and Family,
Was great catching up on the blog here.
67 degrees NICE, we had 45 up here, does that count for anything?

Peace out,
Rita
